Video: drifting on Kurume in 1991

I think these three videos are about the earliest drift videos to be found on Youtube so far!
Be prepared for an overkill of Hakosuka Skylines, Corolla Levin AE86s and Sprinter Trueno AE86s, (brand new) Nissan Silvia and 180SX S13s, Mazda FCs, MR2 AW11s, Isuzu Gemini, Eunos Roadster, Lancer Turbo, Toyota Carina and even an Isuzu Piazza right at the beginning! Two of the videos are shot on the pass next to Kurume (Fukuokai) and the other one on Yz circuit in Mizunami!

In this second video it really shows how dangerous the drifts of these guys actually were: I stopped counting after the tenth near accident with oncoming traffic!

Yes, a real bunch of lunatics!

There is some serious action on the YZ circuit going on and at 4:36 you can spot an occasional zenki Carina GT twice:

Looking at all this track action I get the feeling the aftermarket for springs and shocks wasn’t as big as today! Most of the cars drift like a boat! 😀

I understand why Shuichi Shigeno got inspired by his drift friends back in the early nineties! These guys really were way before drifting went from fun to pro.

DOTS: Mysterious old racecar

This mysterious old racecar wasn’t particularly Down on the Street, it was more or less on a roof:
Mysterious old racecar
Mysterious old racecar

I passed it several times when I went to work on a different route but never actually took the time to have a good look at it. It really looks like a small old racecar from the early 50s.

But this time I had a better look at it and brought along my camera. As you can see from this angle there is a figure sitting in it:

Eventhough I do think some original parts (e.g. shocks and such) were used it is probably a sculpture! 😉

Around the world in 40 days

No, I’m not taking on any bets and certainly not going to do Michael Palins effort in half the time…
It is all about this envelope I received earlier this week: one of the orders for the Bosozoku Style Coloringbook than was returned to sender. Not that it is that odd, but what was odd was the state of the envelope:
Around the world in 40 days
Around the world in 40 days

It went all the way to New Zealand (about on the opposite site of the earth for me) and back in 40 days! I do use thick and heavy envelopes with a solid back to send it to the buyers who are not on the continent. And miraculously the contents survived well enough to be resent to the buyer (with a new address) so it was a good thing to take those precautions! 🙂
