Japanese Rustoseums: the very rare junkyard

From various sources (like WasabiCars) I understood that finding a junkyard in Japan is very rare. There are some private yards that are mostly owned by garage owners and use the cars in the yard as spare parts. When I saw this photo of a real junkyard on a Japanese blog I couldn’t believe what I saw:
Japanese Rustoseums: the rare junkyard
In this big pile of rust I detected: a Mercury Cougar, a four door Toyota Chaser X30, a Mitsubishi Galant Λ (aka the Mitsubishi/Plymouth Sapporo and Dodge Challenger), a Toyota Celica A60 (maybe an XX?), a Nissan Skyline C210, a Toyota Corona T130, a Toyota Crown MS50 and the nicest of them all: a Toyota Publica van.

Friday Video: The very first Best Motoring video!

Back in December 1987 the very first issue of Best Motoring video became available. The video was a monthly magazine containing not only car news and reviews but also extensive how-to’s on subjects of mastering cornering or drifting. KaKo posted this video in four separate parts:
Best Motoring first video: Mitsubishi HSR Concept
The first video covers the Nissan MID-4 II, Toyota FXV-Ⅱ and Mitsubishi HSR concept cars. Followed by a short video (in sepia) about the Tokyo Motor Show from the 50s till 80s including the 27th motorshow that just happened days before the release of the video. And last part of the first video covers an extensive test between various cars including the new (second generation) CR-X Si and the Nissan Skyline GTS-X R31.

Hilarious: Super Duper Toyota Crowns!

While browsing the interwebs I do encounter a lot of different websites and some of them are more interesting than others. Some others are less interesting but do feature hidden gems in not that interesting things. Take for instance this Toyota Crown S120 brochure which features this model/type overview in one of the last pages:
Toyota Crown MS120/GS120 brochure
What strikes me is that about every model of the Toyota Crown is super: Sedan Super Deluxe, Sedan Super Saloon, Sedan Super Saloon Extra, Station Wagon Super Saloon, Hardtop Super Edition, Hardtop Super Saloon and the cherry on top is the Hardtop Super Saloon Extra! How much more super can it get? ;)

Some time ago Daniel O’Grady from Wasabi Cars posted a video about a neglected private car-collection where he mentioned that every car in Japan features a super deluxe somewhere: Continue reading

Car chases: mysteriously dented Whale Crown

Currently I’m watching the 70s series called The Persuaders! which is way before my time but nevertheless very entertaining to watch. The series is an adventure/detective around Roger Moore shortly before he became 007. Basically Roger Moore had just upgraded from a crook (The Saint) to lord (Brett Sinclair) and with his sidekick Danny Wilde (played by Tony Curtis) he miraculously encounters many (coincidental) adventures with spies, diplomats and other rich and famous people. In this particular episode Brett Sinclair gets mistaken for a British spy by Kay (played by Suzy Kendall) and the Russians drive a RHD whale Crown in this episode:
Toyota Kujira (whale) Crown MS60 in The Persuaders!

Moore drives an Aston Martin DBS and Curtis drives a LHD Ferrari Dino 246 GT and most other vehicles are periodically and location correct (LHD Renaults, Simcas and Peugeots when located in France), so this Crown is a bit of an oddball in this series as it is RHD, has Corps Diplomatique plates and is supposed to be a Russian car. Perhaps back in 1971 when the Kujira (whale) Crown was released and this episode was shot it really looked like it came directly from outer space and the producers thought the viewers would dig it as Soviet design?

I made a short compilation of the Crown in action: Continue reading
