Carina Sightings: Toyota Carina GT-R AA63 on wide steel rims

I stumbled upon this awesome red Toyota Carina GT-R AA63 on widened steel rims with stretched tires:

One of the differences between the Carina GT and GT-R was the lack of alloys, or better: cool looking steel rims that were too narrow (5.5J I think).

This GT-R swapped its alloys for the GT items instead:

I keep forgetting that when widened the steel rims also look awesome.
Also notice the flashlight creating a white pinstripe suggestion in the first photo. Perhaps I should do a similar black pinstripe to my Carina? A cool and simple touch that makes the car look way nicer!

Carina Sightings: Toyota Carina ST at Paris-Dakar

Almost seven years ago I posted about Masaru Kubota’s and Masahiro Uchida’s Toyota Carina ST joining the Paris-Dakar rally in 1982 and 1983 and today I stumbled upon this amazing photo of the very same Carina:
Carina Sightings: Masaru Kubota Toyota Carina ST AA60 Paris Dakar
To be honest: I’m speechless here. So much awesomeness being pushed out of that boxy four door sedan by team ACP!

I think the photo is part of an unknown Toyota and/or Carina brochure as it states “…across the burning sands of the Sahara…” and underneath that “turn to center pages”. This indicates there are some center pages (brochures?) with more of this. I hope I will somehow uncover this in the future.

Carina Sightings: immaculate Toyota Carina TA61 GT

Finding an immaculate Toyota Carina TA61 GT like this is almost as good as eating a Magnum icecream: you have to make choices in life what’s important and what’s not…
This Carina GT was sold in december 1981 which makes it one of the earliest GT models of the Carina as the new A60 series only was for sale starting in September.

This well preserved 112000 kilometer example really breathes the 1981 era well: it has tweed seats, fender mounted mirrors and wind deflectors at the front.

It is almost immaculate: the plastic trim next to rear door is showing a bit of wear. Continue reading

Brilliant: Toyota Carina GT-TR digital dashboard

As a follow up on yesterdays Mitsubishi Starion digital dashboard post I wanted to show the difference with the Toyota Carina GT-TR TA63 digital dashboard:
Toyota Carina GT-TR TA63 Digital Dashboard
As I wrote yesterday: the Starion dashboard has a lot more gauges than the Toyota counterpart, but the Toyota digital dashboard is a lot brighter with many more LEDs. On the left you can see the failure indicators (including oil pressure, oil temperature and voltage) and the indicator if the turbo is boosting or not. On the right you can see the fuel gauge and water temperature gauge as LEDs. A lot brighter than the Starion indeed.

Now if you compare the digital dashboard with the analogue below you immediately can see the difference: the analogue has an extra oil pressure gauge and features all the failure indicators on the right.

Just like the Starion, you can see the Toyota Carina GT-TR digital dashboard in action below: Continue reading

Magazines: Kaikki Karina – All About Carina

About two weeks ago I found an auction on Auctions Yahoo that sold two (old) magazines about the Toyota Carina A60 for a reasonable price, so obviously I was interested to buy it. I happily bid on it and two weeks later the both of them landed on my desk at work (thanks Buyee!):
Kaikki Karina: All about Carina
What I didn’t get from the auction text was that these magazines were actually from 1981 and 1982 and not new! The magazines are called Kaikki Karina (カリーナのすべて – All About Carina) and I suspect they were a long running Toyota Carina owners magazine.

The great thing about having these old magazines is that they actually include all sorts of time period extra information, like the design studies done for the Carina sedan: Continue reading

Carina Sightings: Devil Toyota Carina AA63 at NCML Drift

It doesn’t state why this Toyota Carina AA63 in a NCML drift video is called the Devil Carina but I think if you watch the video you will get a good hunch why.
Carina Sightings: Devil Toyota Carina AA63 at NCML Drift
Not only does it go sideways just as good as all the AE86s surrounding it, it also gets rediculously close to the white Toyota Corolla Levin AE86 driving up front, over and over again. And damn, those Volk Racing TE37v sure do look awesome on the Toyota Carina AA63!

You can watch the full video below:
