Remembering Japanese cars from the past

Is this Nissan Cefiro A31 whaling the Japanese salaryman? – Commercial time

The 1988 Nissan Cefiro A31 was offered as a sporty four-door saloon alternative to the Toyota Cresta and Chaser competitors. It shared many components with the Skyline (R31), Laurel (C31) and Leopard (F31) of a similar generation. The drivetrain and rear multi-link setup were shared with all four of them and the front strut-based suspension with the Laurel. If you squint your eyes, you will also conclude it shares its design with the beautifully styled 1988 Nissan Silvia S13.

So can we conclude the Nissan Cefiro A31 is just a Nissan Laurel C31 with a Silvia S13 nosejob? Perhaps it does. Judging from the various ads I found online it’s rather aimed towards the sportier image of the Silvia than the dull salaryman image of the Laurel. Most ads tend to highlight this. Most of them. Most of them except this one featuring a whale:

The cars of Initial D – Manga Car Spotting – part 1

Manga Cars

Ever wondered which cars are featured in Initial D? And perhaps also wondered which model, make and type these manga cars are? In this third episode of Manga car spotting, I’ll be spotting cars in the first book of Initial D! This first book is the US version of the Manga by Tokyopop and covers chapters 1 to 10 of the Japanese Manga.

Initial D by Shuichi Shigeno

I don’t think Initial D needs an introduction: it’s the classic racing manga / racing anime series that gained huge popularity during the mid 1990s in Japan and mid 2000s outside Japan. The manga itself contains many layers of depth and isn’t just about cars, but also about (family) relationships and harsh training by commitment and determination. These first 10 chapters are mostly the introductory of the characters and the setting, so not a lot of action will happen. Still it was fun to do!

Video: 1988 Mitsubishi Mirage cup race

Regular readers know I have a weakness for the third generation Mitsubishi Mirage (which is also known as the Mitsubishi Colt outside Japan) because it was my first car. I guess everybody has the same thing with his/her first car… So of course I was very excited to watch this ’87 Mitsubishi Mirage cup race taken from an 1988 Best Motoring video (posted on Youtube by Rocketpencil):

Of course my Colt wasn’t as quick as this the ones zooming over the circuit (mine actually featured the slowest 1.3 SOHC carb-ed engine) so I can only dream of what performance must have come out of the 4G61T powered Mirages. The specs on Wikipedia speak about the range of 200hp, so not bad for a 1.6 litre Twin Cam Turbo engine. ;)

Anyway, here is the video: Continue reading

Merry Chistmas and a happy New Year!

It almost became a unwritten tradition to post a picture of a certain Toyota Carina with my X-mas wishes and last year was a bit sad. So I decided not to get as corny as my neighbor who sends me a Christmas card including her and her dogs and decided to post this photo I took of a Silvia instead:
Merry Christmas and a happy new year!
So merry Chistmas and a happy New Year!
