Carina Sightings: Carina AA63 20v Sedan on Goo-Net

I found this Carina AA63 on Goo-net:

I know what you probably thought first: that must be a scale model!

Well, it is not! Have a look at this:

That looks a lot better, doesn’t it? ;)
I have no clue what the photographer did wrong in that first picture, but is surely looks weird. Maybe it is the combination of the garage floor and the rollcage creating an illusion of a reflection in the windscreen…

This Carina GT-R got its heart swapped for a nice revving 4A-GE 20 valve Blacktop. As you can see the radiator has been upgraded as well. Also the owner did not bother to swap the cooling fan in the process.

Funny thing: I just realized that relocating the waterpump and distriubutor are not necessary for the Carina AA63: it sits more in front of the firewall than in the AE86! So all you have to do is reroute all piping of the radiator to the back of the engine! I verified this by looking at Revolverdrift’s AA63 20v setup.

Unfortunately his Carina got stolen last week. So, if anyone has seen his car, in or outside Malaysia, please let him know! I hope it will return soon!

Talking about theft:
Anti fuel theft?
Anti fuel theft?

Looks weird… Only logical explanation I can come up with is that this car either has a fuelcell (not visible), a weird D1SL or MSC rule I’m not aware of or an anti fuel theft method. I suspect the most probable is the last explanation.

The rollcage is of the removable type so the cage itself is placed a bit annoying nearer to the center of the car. The rear bench has been stripped and a set of bucketseats have replaced the original front seats.

The car is sitting on a set of deep dished SSR Mk. IIs. The rims can’t be much wider than 7J because they don’t stick out of the fenders.

You would think: what’s so special about this car then?
Well, the car itself isn’t that special. It is more that the surprise picture caught my eye, then the anti fuel theft and then I also realized the 20v problem didn’t apply to the AA63 Carina. So that’s worth a Carina Sightings posting I guess. ;)

Carina Sightings: Another Toyota Carina GT-R AA63 on Speedhunters

Mike Garrett came across another Toyota Carina AA63 in a drift competition. This time he saw it at the HKS Premium day on the Fuji Speedway:

Compare it to the Carina AA63 he spotted before on Tsukuba circuit:
Black Carina GT-R AA63 on Tsukuba circuit drifting
Black Carina GT-R AA63 on Tsukuba circuit drifting

As you can see the Tsukuba Carina is a much more low budget drifter than the Fuji Speedway Carina: less bodyparts, no airdam, bend hood, single wiper, missing headlight and the Fuji Speedway Carina has way less stickers. Personally I like the Tsukuba Carina more eventhough it looks less pretty: it is more beaten up which makes it more charming IMO. On the other hand the Fuji Speedway Carina drifts a much smoother line…

Tilt-shift style photos

Everybody must have made model kits and made pictures of those model kits as well. So, you know that extreme close pictures make the sharp-depth of your pictures worse and about half of your model kit looks blurred. Actually the same can happen when you take extreme closeups of your children (like Olivér for instance ;) ) and half of their face is blurred.

Well, thanks to IZ Reloaded I found this great website which can do that effect for every photo you have!! :)

As you can see Revolver Drift’s Carina AA63 Coupe almost looks like a real scale model now!

And I did the same for this great photograph at the AEU86 meeting in Limburg. It really looks like it was set on some scalemodel environment in this picture!

Fun stuff: 80s Carina GT-R AA63 digidash Quartz clock

I found this great 80s period time piece on Auctions.yahoo.co.jp but unfortunately the auction has already ended…

80s Carina GT-R AA63 digital dashboard quartz clock
80s Carina GT-R AA63 digital dashboard quartz clock

What is it? Well it is the digital dashboard of the Carina GT-R AA63 (and GT-TR TA63) but then with a quartz clock in it to hang on your wall! ;)

The thing is, of course, horrendous and so ugly I would not dare to put in anywhere on my wall. But it intrigues me why anyone would create such a thing in the first place and, of course, it should be preserved for future generations! :P

The only thing that strikes me is why they put the quartz clock at the place of the speedo and not on the place of the quartz clock… It looks a bit double now… But who knows, perhaps it would have looked less like a clock then. ;)
