Carina sightings: Carina AA63 winning D1SL North

Found a Carina AA63 competing in D1SL North 3rd round (Chitose) on Youtube. The car is driven by Taoka Tomokazu and he ends up winning this event!

During quarter finals it competes against a JZX100 Chaser and wins:

During the finals it is put against a Nissan 180SX RPS13 driven by Masayuki Ono Akira where the Carina wins the first run:

The second run the Carina spins due to the 180SX touching the Carina. In the rematch the Carina spins again, but this time by its own error so the error by the 180SX is now nullified. Then in the final run the Carina and 180SX are equally matched in lines, but at the final corner the 180SX spins.

So the outcome is that the Carina won!

The 180SX driver pretends to be angry at his RPS13 and climbs on top of it pretending to stamp on its roof. :D

Of course the Carina could never have come this far without the help of a bit of rain, like what Alexi lacked during his third round in D1SL Central when the track dried up… The rain neutralizes the factor of having a more powerful engine than the others, so even less powerful cars have a good chance of winning. Still it is a very very good result controlling a car in such heavy rain and winning in such fierce competition! ?(ยด?`)/

Carina Sightings: Joe Manji event in New Zealand

I read a blog posting last night at 86fighters about the Joe Manji event in New Zealand. Part II followed up later on and both parts feature Carinas. :)

First Carina is probably an AA63TA63 with the 4AGE 3T-GTE engine. Its front bumper got replaced for an AE92 front bumper:

The second Carina is a well known TA63 Carina with a 1UZ engine swap and a great history:

The owner (Glenn) did a great job on that Carina! As you can see the 1UZ engine is a great engine to put in a Carina! Unfortunately they are very very hard to get in Europe. :(

Update: A video got posted on Youtube:

That Carina is now a very sick car! And that 1UZ sounds brutal!
Great! Now I really want a 1UZ in mine! :(

Drifting in the 90s

After last Saturday’s Advan Racing intro I watched some more 90s footage.

I found some footage of drift events from the early 90s till the late 90s. They really show that drifting is something new and something that could only be done by practically anyone! If you hear the amount applause for every one of the drivers you really start to wonder why on earth we have a judging system for D1GP! ;)

First video is covering 1990/1991:

Big LOL @1:18. Saw that one coming from miles away! :D
And @1:32 a Carina AA63 Policecar replica!
As you can see, the 180SX @2:25 is brand new and doing a great job. Really skillfully drifted around the corners and way above the rest of the drivers. Note that this is Orido Manabu’s 180SX! You can see the young Orido start to cry when he wins his first victory ever! Shortly after this victory he leaves drifting and enters serious racing in Fuji freshman class.

Second video is covering 1991/1992/1993:

In this video you see the drift events getting bigger and getting more and more professional. Cars are not old clunckers anymore and are getting nice and fresh aerodynamic performance parts.

Then the third video fast forwards to the late 90s, 1997-1999:

All of a sudden all drivers are more skilled than before: they won’t make big mistakes anymore. Their entry speeds are much higher and their lines are much better! And now it makes much more sense to have a judging system to determine which drivers are better than others…

Carina Sightings: Carina AA63 Sedan on Suzuka

Yesterday I found this video of an AA63 sedan racing on Suzuka circuit (west course). The engine is probably almost bone stock with a few small modifications like an open airfilter.

He does a quite good run but then runs into some slower (probably pit out) Hakosuka Skylines and then gets passed by a very quick 280ZX. Quite fun to see him trying to chase the 280ZX for some time but then he gets engine trouble.

You can hear around 4:12 some metal sound in the engine note and the driver probably broke something in the engine. Also in the comments it states that the engine broke, but it doesn’t say exactly what broke. He then tails the Ken-meri and another Hakosuka Skyline and when he enters the pit lane he immediately leaves the track.

Carina Sightings: Carina AA63 4AGZE Supercharged Sedan

Some time ago I came across a gallery on photos.yahoo.co.jp with this very nice supercharged Carina GTR sedan:

Unfortunately there is not much info within this gallery, so we can only do guesswork here!

At least the car got a really nice old school Toyota decal on the bonnet! I still can’t understand why Toyota swapped this logo for the current one: it looks much better than the old one! (Of course I do know why… ;) )

Nice lip! I still need to mount mine, so I hope mine will look just as great as this one! ;)

Great stance on this Carina AA63

The stance of this Carina is just perfect: lowered just enough with just enough camber on the front! (rear goes automatically with lowering)

The car is pretty beaten up so I recon it is being used/abused often:

And it is also very rusted:

I think this describes the state of the body pretty much.

But this makes everything right I guess:

The 4AGZE supercharger swap should be quite streightforward, just like on the AE86: supercharger flow is rerouted to the front and pushes the air through the front mounted intercooler.

There is no cage installed so it wasn’t used as a track or drift car, so this car should have seen a lot of action on the roads instead. Could be a touge drifter or maybe a drag racer?

Eventough this Carina is probably rusted through badly I would swap it for mine anytime! ;)
