WTF: Masato Kawabata’s cornering

When I saw this video the first time I thought the video was about Masato Kawabata’s 180SX RPS13 spinning while initiating the drift. But then all of a sudden the WTF!? moment was there!

Masato Kawabata ddi this in the fourth round of the D1GP in Okayama where he received the full 100 points from all judges!

Carina sightings: Carina AA63 winning D1SL North

Found a Carina AA63 competing in D1SL North 3rd round (Chitose) on Youtube. The car is driven by Taoka Tomokazu and he ends up winning this event!

During quarter finals it competes against a JZX100 Chaser and wins:

During the finals it is put against a Nissan 180SX RPS13 driven by Masayuki Ono Akira where the Carina wins the first run:

The second run the Carina spins due to the 180SX touching the Carina. In the rematch the Carina spins again, but this time by its own error so the error by the 180SX is now nullified. Then in the final run the Carina and 180SX are equally matched in lines, but at the final corner the 180SX spins.

So the outcome is that the Carina won!

The 180SX driver pretends to be angry at his RPS13 and climbs on top of it pretending to stamp on its roof. ๐Ÿ˜€

Of course the Carina could never have come this far without the help of a bit of rain, like what Alexi lacked during his third round in D1SL Central when the track dried up… The rain neutralizes the factor of having a more powerful engine than the others, so even less powerful cars have a good chance of winning. Still it is a very very good result controlling a car in such heavy rain and winning in such fierce competition! ?(ยด?`)/

Rumor: Toyota Subaru 086A may feature two different body styles

I really found this exciting news by 7Tune.com: the Subaru/Toyota 086a compact sports car is rumored to have two different bodystyles based upon the Legacy floorpan. There are two styles: a very sleek look (Celica T230 lookalike?) and a more serious boxy version.

Why is this exciting news? Well, quite simple: the Toyota AE86 already featured two bodystyles! There was the more sporty Sprinter Trueno with the popuplights and the more serious Corolla Levin and both shared the same monocoque and bodystyle after the nose. This to improve the reuse of parts between the two cars. This caused a lot Levins to feature Trueno taillights and vice versa.

Then there was the Nissan S13 platform which did the same trick as well but differentiated between the two cars by creating a sporty hatchback and a sleek coupe for touring. After a short period people started to do swaps between the two different cars, mostly because of damaged frontends, and most of these swaps involved a Silvia S13 front to be mounted on a RPS13 180SX and creating the Sil80. The opposite of this was called the OneIva but was a bit more rare because it involved a bit more work. (I know: in the US the OneIva came rolling out of the factory, but it is Japan I’m referring to…) Nowadays we also see a lot of Silvia S15 fronts mounted on S13s and S14s as well.

Also the Nissan Skyline GTR (R34/R35) front gets mounted on several cars, like the Stagea. Also let’s not forget the Bee*R R324 and R334 bodykits which allow you to mount a R34 on a R32 and R33. ๐Ÿ˜€

So, what will these two cars sharing the same 086a monocoque bring to us? Hopefully we’ll see the hybrid bodystyles soon enough! ๐Ÿ™‚

Random: Nomuken police special!

Some time ago I came across this bizarre video of Ken Nomura (aka Nomuken) in two situations with the police:

In the first part he’s driving his 180SX RPS13 Type X, second part is him a bit older driving a Nissan Laurel C33 police car in a Blitz outfit. The first part appears to be put into scene but is quite funny to watch and the second part is just hilarious: chasing a small drifting kei car with that big C33 Laurel!

The big questions are: why is he driving his RHD 180SX type X in the US when this car was not his professional drifter after 2000 and where can I buy a C33 Laurel? ๐Ÿ˜›

Touge drifting video from 1995

This amateur drift video (3 parts), made in 1995 on the Hakone Pass, also shows that AE86s back in those days were very popular as well. I counted at least 8 or 9 different hachi-rokus, however it is a bit difficult with so many stock hachis:

I did spot a Z10 Soarer, KE70 corolla and a KP61 starlet as well. Other popular cars are the RPS13 180sx and the S13 Silvia. Must say all these cars resemble the stock look of the early Initial D chapters, which of course is the same period. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Watched Initial D Extra Stage 2 part 1

I watched the first 7 minutes of Initial D Extra Stage 2 Japanese raw I found somewhere on the net.

First impression: nice cartoony graphics during the intro. ๐Ÿ™‚
Second impression: too bad they didn’t continue with that during the rest of the episode. ๐Ÿ™

So far it looks like Mako is missing Iketani and the Akina Speedstars decide to take a drive up Mount Akina. Nothing much happening so far:

What I like is usage of the split screen graphics, just like in the episodes in Stage 4. The screenshot above of the four different Akina Speedstars cars (Takumi’s Corolla Levin AE86, Itsuki’s Corolla Levin AE85, Iketani’s Silvia S13 and Kenji’s 180SX RPS13) show nice usage of this. Hopefully this will also feature more during the battles. ๐Ÿ™‚

Overall I think the quality of the graphics is as good as we saw in Stage 4. I actually did expect it to be another improvement as we saw during Stage 4. Music was again by Move and the soundtrack sounded catchy and not too Eurobeat.

Can’t wait to watch the rest of the movie! ๐Ÿ™‚
