Remembering Japanese cars from the past

Itasha: this year will be big!

A new year has started, so let’s bring on the predictions for the upcoming year! My first prediction will be that Itasha will become big! Maybe not outside Japan, but surely it will become BIG in Japan!

As you can see in this video at 4:05 even Isami Amemiya is picking up the trend! So if you want to be running up front and be a trend setter: start converting your GTR, FD or VIP car to an Itasha! :D

Double classic: 1965 Hino Contessa Sprint filmed in 1985

How about a double classic? This one off prototype of the Hino Contessa Sprint was filmed in 1985:

The Contessa Sprint 900 was drawn by Michelotti and exhibited at the Turin Auto Show in 1962 and it looks a bit like the beautifully styled Glas cars.

This 1965 Contessa Sprint was prepared for the 1966 Paris Auto Salon by French autobuilder Alpine (before they became part of Renault) and its underpinnings are shared with the famous Alpine 110 and featured a specially tuned DOHC 1300 engine from the Contessa 1300! Now that is a car I would certainly like to drive!

Carina sightings: Black Carina AA63 on Nikko Circuit

Found this nice Carina AA63 GT-R dirft video on Youtube today:

Since the video was taken from the roof of a car and the camera was a cheap Chinese knock off you may want to turn down the volume: it is nothing more than wind noise!

As you can see the Carina looks a bit like a drift missile: beaten up on all sides and literally covered in stickers and patches. It still does its job as it should: going sideways on Nikko Circuit!

Some of you may already have noticed: this is indeed the black Carina GT-R Mike Garrett covered on Speedhunters over one year ago!

Commercial time: 80s greatest hits with Cultus GTi

The decade of the Ohs (or The Noughties as the British call them) has almost ended now, so how about some greatest hits from the 80s?

The Final Countdown by Europe
Which 80s song is more 80s than this song? I can’t think of any other song…
The heel-to-toe is a nice touch! ;)

West End Girls by the Pet Shop Boys
It is nice to see how the Cultus GTi rev meter mimics those amp meters you could find on every early 80s stereo!

Love Changes Everything by Climie Fisher
Back in the 80s I really hated those cheap songs by Climie Fisher, but in combination with the engine revs and tire squeal it gives a whole new dimension to this song. ;)

Died In Your Arms Tonight by Cutting Crew
Another one of those typically 80s songs. Now I hope the dying part of the song is supposed to be in a positive way or was it supposed to mean the car didn’t have any safety precautions like airbags? :D

The Suzuki Cultus SA310, could there be anything more 80s than this?
