JDM Trivia #5: Toyota Total Clean System

Last weeks teaser was: What is this badge and what does TTC stand for?
Some guesses were made and some people refrained from googling, but Rookie Tuner provided the correct answer: TTC is an acronym for Toyota Total Clean System.
Japanese Emission Regulations
Just like now in Shanghai and Milan some major cities in Japan during the 60s smog was getting really bad. The Japanese government responded with an emission regulations law in 1968 that would become active in January 1975. Toyota responded to this with the three versions of the Toyota Total Clean System and applied it to various car models. Toyota advertised the Toyota Crown S80 as pure, clean and serene. Almost as if you no longer have to feel guilty for pollution when you are driving a car.
TTC-C introduced the catalytic converter, TTC-V recirculated the exhaust gasses and TTC-L used a lean burn method. The TTC-V was basically a licensed copy of Honda’s CVCC system but got discontinued already in 1977.The lean burn and catalytic converter engines did survive, however Toyota did no longer apply the badges on the trunklids nor did they advertise strongly with the system. It was not as if the air became cleaner the environmental concern also became less popular. In contrary: the Japanese government hardened their emission regulations which led to the 1978 law that forced the TTC system to be replaced by the TGP system and a three way catalytic converter to comply to these stricter laws.
DECS: Daihatsu Economical Cleanup System
Toyota did license their Toyota Total Clean System to Daihatsu who relabelled it DECS, short for Daihatsu Economical Cleanup System. Daihatsu wasn’t a full Toyota daughter company yet, but they borrowed the catalytic converter and lean burn technology and applied it to their mostly borrowed Toyota technology stack.
