Remembering Japanese cars from the past

JAF 2010 pics and new blogroll

Some time ago I posted a racing spec Supra MA71 spotted by on the Dutch highways. Since then I’m following his blog where he already posted a Honda Civic tribute and about Initial D. Yesterday he posted about his visit to the Japanese Autosport Festival at the TT circuit in Assen with 100+ pictures!

These are my two favorite pictures of the JAF 2010:

And tp give you an overview of what I missed this weekend:

On one side I really regret not going there, but on the other side I’m happy I stayed at home since my son’s tonsils were removed last Friday and he was really suffering from it.

Commerical time: Yes, be pop with your Corsa!

When I saw this commercial my first thought was that the title was wrong: it looks like a zenki AE86 Sprinter Trueno front end in the first seconds, but then I saw the rear… Oh my… That resembled the third generation Daihatsu Charade!

Yes, be pop with your Corsa! Or Tercel for the non-Japanese residents!

This third generation Corsa featured a 3E-TELU powered GP Turbo model that was clearly marketed as a little sister of the Trueno. In power it actually may have been (almost) equal to the AE86, but it drivetrain was unfortunate in the 80s FF fashion… Otherwise it may have been a candidate to be the Starlet KP61 sucessor!

DOTS: 1997 Subaru E-Wagon (Sambar)

Back in the 80s the keitora were flooding the Netherlands, including the mother of all keitoras: the Subaru E-Wagon. Also known as the Subaru Sambar (Japan), Libero, Sumo and Domingo. Most of the Keitora were used as delivery vans by the Dutch Joe the Plumber, but the E-Wagon was mainly used as family transportation.

This immaculate example really looks like a great way of transportation and if it would have aircon it would make a great car for daily transportation! It even has a 3 cylinder 1.2 liter engine in it that outpowers the homemarket supercharged 658cc EN07Y! Now if it only looked good as well it would have been a good option, but to be honest: I would never ever want to be seen driving such a thing… :o

Carina Sightings: RA45 Carina GT sedan

Every generation of Carinas had its GT model, including the A40 generation. The A40 generation had four flavors of GT models: the 4 door sedan and 3 door hardtop, powered by the 1588cc 2T-G and the 1968cc 18R-G engines.

This 1980 four door Carina is the kouki GT 2000 sedan, meaning it is a RA45:

The quad headlights on the GT model really look like a predecessor of the A60 headlights.

And the taillights also look very different from the normal A40:

They are darker and the reverse lights are now placed inside the moulding.

It also got lowered a bit:

These old school Work Equipe reverse really fit the Kyusha Kai style!

Seeing how beautiful the kouki A40 actually can be I would trade my TA60 for one anytime! ;)
