Remembering Japanese cars from the past

Commerical time: Nissan Coupe Rz-1

I always liked the looks of the Nissan Sunny B12: sleek, boxy, fast and still looking normal enough to be a wolf in sheeps clothing! In Japan they were marketed as the Nissan Coupe Rz-1 which sounds a lot more 80s in my ears than the Sunny Coupe.

Somehow it may sound funny, but this commercial made me laugh: my Down on the Street regular started with a Nissan Sunny B12 used by a window cleaner and imagine this streamlined commercial with a big ladder on top of the car!

Why old cameras rule: Nissan Sunny B110

Before I bought my Canon EOS 350D (also called Canon Rebel in the US) I used to shoot all my photos with my trusty Minolta X300. I’m still sorry I sold the camera shortly after I bought the EOS… I probably thought I would eventually get used to the EOS and actually put effort in shooting pictures with that camera. After 4 years I’m still not used to the EOS and still do the click-clack-lets-do-another-ten-and-choose-the-right-one like I did with my first digicam. Damn, I miss analogue photography! 🙁

Lately I become more and more interested in photography with the good old analogue cams and I was quite happy to see this beautifully shot Nissan Sunny GX B110 at beeoneoneoh’s blog:

Now that’s an image you can hardly shoot with a digital camera!

Very beautiful shot of the rear of the Sunny. Almost impossible with the sharp and crispy lenses of the new digicams!

I love it! 🙂

These pictures were shot with this vintage camera with a Leica Summilux-M 50/1.4 lens:

I’ll definitely start looking for a secondhand vintage camera tonight! 🙂

Commerical time: Nissan Sunny uber alles?

When I saw this video on Youtube my first thought was ohmygodohmygodohmygodohmygodohmygodohmygod!

This Nissan Sunny B13 commercial of the early 90s is having a really badly sung German-like song (probably by a Japanese woman) and a Japanese man dressed up as a German hunter praising it. Lucky enough they did not go for the over the top Bavarian look!

And the things I could make of the German lyrics of the song was: “Ich bin zu frieden” (I’m content), “Und mochte nichts mehr haben” (And don’t need anything else) and “ist dies falsch über alles?” (is this wrong about everything?). I couldn’t make much more of it, but the “zu frieden”, “mehr haben” and “über alles” are the keywords of this advertisement. Nissan Sunny über alles?

How bad can it get?

Please don’t mind the misspellings in German or a bad translation from my side: German is not my mother tongue.

DOTS: Nissan Sunny Coupe B12

This Nissan Sunny Coupe B12 is mostly parked near my house. I spotted it several times and even though it doesn’t look like it moves regularly: it move every day!

The car is owned by, presumably, a window cleaner. His ladders are always mounted on top of the roof (never seen it without them) and in the trunk there are things like buckets and stuff.

Looking at the styling the car already went out of fashion in 1988, but as we know its 100nx predecessor became available in 1991.

The Sunny Coupe is a 1990 model. It is very near the Toyota Levin AE86 with styling and a lot of people confused it with that car. It features the GA16i 1.6 liter and produces 92hp.

32 year old vintage racing videos

One of the blogs I started following recently found these really great vintage racing videos shot at 29th of may 1977 at Tsubaka. That means they are 32 years + 4 days old and contain a huge amount of classic JDM tin doing laps on Tsubaka.

First of all this impressive TS cup:

A lot of good dogfights can be seen in this video! Next to the ubiquitous Nissan Sunny B310s you can spot several first generation Honda Civics, a Mazda RX3 Familia and I also spotted a Corolla TE37 among them!

The next video is the T-EX cup:

This cup contains about the same cars as the TS cup, but then all the drivers are amateurs. Also the cars are a bit less exciting: a Familia racing in that cup clearly isn’t a RX3 but a 808 Familia. Same probably applies to the ubiquitous Sunnys, Publicas and Corollas racing this cup. This video is the most fun to watch: driving on cheap tires makes them skid around the corners!

Last video is the womens race:

Too bad only four female drivers were competing, otherwise it would have been much more fun to watch! Now it is basically two chicks fighting and the other two coming up from behind…

I found the videos at Beeoneoneoh’s blog. If you liked these videos you probably also like his blog! 🙂

Toyota Corolla KE30 turns out to be a Nissan Sunny B122

Remember this one?

I posted it here shortly before Christmas:

Must have missed this JNC blogposting during the holidays:
http://japanesenostalgiccar.com/blog/2008/12/28/rs-yasus-nissan-sunny-b122-pickup-resto/
Because the Corolla KE30 pickup turns out to be a Nissan Sunny B122 pickup. Must have overlooked that it could possibly be a Sunny and not a Corolla. Well, they do look very much alike after all. 😉
