Remembering Japanese cars from the past

Reading: Train man (Densha Otoko)

I’m currently reading Densha Otoko (Train man) novel.
Train man novel

The book originated inside a thread on 2Channel which is a forum in Japan. This thread was meant for single men on the forum and the writer, later on called Densha Otoko (which mean train man, however Otoko is actually worse than Otaku), wrote that he saved some women on the train from a drunk man who was herassing them. He received two thank you gifts from the women, from which one of them was sent by a young girl. He actually meets the girl again and has dinner with her and that’s the actual start of a long story of “coming to age” for an otaku.

I must say the book is very readable if you are used to read forums, and lucky enough I’m quite an expert in that. ^_^

I do find some translations very annoying, like for instance otaku gets translated into “techie” or “geek” which does not cover it at all. Ah well, you can’t have everything and lucky enough I already watched the J-Drama.

TA63 Carina GT-TR badge

Just won this Carina GT-TR badge today on http://auctions.yahoo.co.jp:
TA63 Carina GT-TR badge

It’s not meant as badge-tuning, but rather keeping it for the future: when the engine (and transmission) will be swapped and it should be badged as a GT instead of DX. ;)

Oh, and I realized lately what most probably is the height difference is between the GT-T and GT-TR and the GT and GT-R: R spec cars had bigger wheels (kouki spec had 15 inch instead of 14 inch) so the height of the car increased as well!

Exhaust gasket repaired

Exhaust gasket got repaired last week. However it still leaks a tiny bit: the 4-2 header (made from cast iron) is bent a bit due to extensive heat and not completely pressing the gasket anymore.

Also the 2-1 pipe has a small hole in it, so I’m currently sourcing one to pass the MOT, which is due within two months already.

Anyone got two spare tires for me so I can pass that problem as well?

Exhaust gasket arrived

Just got a call this morning: the exhaust gasket arrived already! Much quicker than I expected. :)

Going to collect them this afternoon right after work. It will be a quite a hike for me since I found my bike chained to another this morning and the dealer is quite far away from the railway station. However I do expect to make that part within the 20 minutes I got and the weather is nice today.

So that will be a great hike through Amsterdam Zuidoost for me then. ;)

Convert your new photos into old photos!

This terrific Japanese site can convert your new photos to old photos. It makes them look like photos taken in the 50s, 60s, 70s or even as newspaper photos from the 80s. :)

This is my previous background:
Previous background: AT140 coupe, AA63 sedan and AA63 coupe drifting

This is my new (old) background:
New background: AT140 coupe, AA63 sedan and AA63 coupe drifting somewhere in the 80s

Now it looks like it’s made on a racetrack somewhere during the 80s. I think it’s amazing! :)

Ordered new exhaust gasket

*Sigh*
Always when you have plans for the weekend something will come up and the plans are being cancelled. :(

Yesterday drove to work and the Carina started to make some ticking noise on the highway. Couldn’t figure out what it was and it was only there when the engine was under stress.

During lunchbreak me and a colleague of mine went to see what was wrong with the car and I was already thinking about bent valves or a broken torque converter…

Lucky enough it turned out to be a broken exhaust gasket and only a tiny bit of gasses escaped through it, so that’s why it sounded like a ticking engine. Tried to find the gasket through several part suppliers, but all they could offer me was a complete set of engine gaskets for 57 euros. A bit too much if you’re planning to remove the engine (2T) anyway.

On my way back the noise started to get worse and currently I think it will break entirely if I drive long distances. Also all power from the engine (wasn’t much anyway) is gone now, so I need to replace it asap.

Today I ordered the gasket through Toyota, and to my surprise the part was only 7.33 euros and would be delivered next wednesday. You may find it weird, but most parts of the Trueno were extremely expensive and had long delivery time. (some weatherstrip cost 149 euros and would take 3 weeks to arrive!)

Can’t wait till thursday when I can pick it up! :)
