Carina Sightings: 1985 red Carina GTR AA63

I haven’t seen many red Carinas so far… Of course I’ve seen the infamous Carina Firevan, but not a factory red Carina…

About three weeks ago Kyteler sent me an email about a red Carina for sale at the Toyspeed.org.nz forums:

Unfortunately I could not get in touch with the seller since the forums need approval of your account and I still haven’t been approved so far… :(
Lucky enough Roman posted the same Carina at AEU86.

The Carina itself looks good if you consider its age and mileage:

The car is already 24 years old and an average of 11k kilometers per year. The car travelled 270000 kilometers so far!

According to the seller the hood (and fender) have been repainted prior to his ownership. Most probably with a roller or a brush…

The engine may look good from the outside:

But from the inside it is not that great anymore: blue smoke is seen when cold started or put under stress. In other words: either rebuild the engine or put in a new one. I’d go for the new one: rebuilding a 270k engine doesn’t make much sense. ;)

The interior still looks amazing after 270k!

If you consider all the extras (14×6 Work Equip 01 wheels, torsen LSD, 4 new Monroe Shocks and a spare boot lid) the car is not that expensive for an asking price of $2000! (2800 NZ dollars)

Xmas wish list: the “Japanese Historic Car Graffiti” 2010 calendar

When I saw this calendar I immediately thought “Damn, I want one!”.

The front already looks quite promising with the Honda 1300 coupe (and RA300 Formula one racecar in the background)

What about this mouth watering 4 door Nissan Skyline GTR PGC10?

And a first generation Celica GT fastback RA28?

Now, for only $14 that’s a bargain! Now how do I convince my wife that it is actually a bargain. ;)

DOTS: Miata hunting! (part 2)

This week more I continue with some more Miata hunting!

First of all this MX5 caused a lot of pain:
Mazda MX5 mk2
Mazda MX5 mk2

It came around the corner quite quickly when I was on my bike. I immediately grabbed my camera, pointed it to the car and turned around to take a picture. I was just in time to take the picture. Doing this maneuver strained my back because I was still sitting on my bike. ;)

This red Miata was parked in a multi-story car park:
Mazda Miata (or 323?)
Mazda Miata (or 323?)

Never seen it there before but immediately took a picture of it. :)
When I looked it up at the license plate register it turned out to be registered as a Mazda 323 1.6 instead of the Mazda MX5 I would have expected it to be registered on. The car was imported to the Netherlands in 2001, so that could not have been the reason to register it as a 323. And even tax evasion (import taxes are based upon luxury options as AC and PS) could not have been the case… Maybe the worker at the register could not come up with the MX5 designation and registered it as a 323?

Last one for this week:
Mazda MX5
Mazda MX5

This originally Dutch first generation MX5 was registered on the very last day of 1992. It is currently owned by the same owner for almost 11 years now! Now that is certainly a faithful owner! :)

Contest: win a copy of Need for Speed Shift (part two!)

Last time the contest was too difficult and I still have that copy of NFS! So time to put up a new contest! ;)

Let’s watch this 80s Car Guidance video first:

Now, already impressed by that Honda City Turbo? Now, the question is: what is the nickname of the Honda City Turbo?

Send your answer through the contact form with the subject “CONTEST” before next saturday 0:00 CEST (December 5th 2009). From all correct answers I will pick a winner (random) and announce it later that week on the portal.

And again, the prize:
