I’ve featured Kamepo‘s amazing side-by-side videos a few times before, but never have I seen one that amazed me more than this one! It’s taking a drive on the Shuto expressway K1 and K5. This is a drive from Ota to Daikoku Futo and then over the Yokohama Bay bridge. If that wasn’t wild enough, the 1989 footage was shot early morning on the first of January. In Tokyo it’s a custom to watch the first sunset and the Yokohama Bay bridge is plastered with cars of people watching this!

Highlights

Here are some of the highlights I found in this video: Daikoku Futo, USS Yokohama, a Nissan Skyline 2000GT C10, six Toyota Carina ED T160, a hotrod Mitsubishi Debonair, a Corona coupé T140 and a yellow Mazda RX-7 FD3S.

Daikoku Futo

I already was aware that Daikoku Futo was enclosed in the expressway, but driving on the expressway and then making a huge turn around Daikoku Futo was mind-blowing! Also seeing the exit signs for Daikoku Futo is also something special and then when the 270-degree turn is made, you are presented with the Yokohama Bay bridge and this is again on another level!

USS Yokohama

At 11:27 you also pass a big building with a big USS sign at the top of the building. Naturally, this is the famous USS Yokohama auction site where millions of Japanese cars are auctioned off. It makes me wonder how many of the cars we see in the 1989 footage have passed hands through USS Yokohama? 60%? 70%? All of them?

Following a Nissan Skyline C10

Nissan Skyline C10 (probably a 2000GT)
Nissan Skyline C10 (probably a 2000GT)

The single biggest highlight in the video is that he’s following a Nissan Skyline C10 sedan (a 2000GT judging from the tail lights) for minutes long. Back in 1989, the Skyline C10 was only 20 years old! That’s like tailing a Fairlady Z33 because it’s an old car! Speaking of Fairlady Z33s: there is one in the video, but then in the 2024 footage.

Are six white Carina ED cars a coincidence?

Six times a white Toyota Carina ED T160: coincidence?
Six times a white Toyota Carina ED T160: coincidence?

Another highlight is the sheer number of Carina’s. I’ve counted ten, of which six are a Carina ED T160! Of these six, all six are a white car. It feels as if in 1989 the best-selling car was a white Carina ED! I wouldn’t blame anyone: a four-door hardtop coupé with the Celica underpinnings? Why not? 1989 actually is the last and final year the Carina ED T160 was sold and it was succeeded by the second generation T180.

Hotrod Debonair

Also, this Mitsubishi Debonair was a big highlight! You may assume the same of it as the Skyline C10: it’s a 20-plus-year-old car, so it must have been special. I have some bad news for you: the Debonair was in production for 22 years between 1964 and 1986. It could very well be that this Debonair was only three years old! Realistically it does look a bit worn and it looks like it sits on a set of original Cragar hot rod wheels.

James Bond’s Corona coupé T140

The final highlight from 1989 is a Toyota Corona T140 coupé. The Corona T140 ads featured Roger Moore, who was still playing James Bond. So the Corona T140 must have been a Bond car, right? Wrong! Unlike the 2000GT cabriolet, the Corona never featured in a Bond movie.

This car was at most 4 years old by the time the 1989 video was shot. It has some writing on the side of the door and sits on a set of Celica Supra wheels, which indicates it’s either a GT-R or GT-TR. Some good 4A-GE or 3T-GTEU power!

Keisuke Takahashi’s yellow Mazda RX-7 FD3S

The final highlight is from 2024. This car is a yellow Mazda RX-7 FD3S. It features the same wing as Keisuke Takahashi drives in Initial D, so my best guess is that this is a replica of that very same car. It seems to feature the Mazda RX-7 Series 8 taillights and Mazdaspeed A-Spec Spoiler Type II, so it’s a Stage 4 replica.
