Remembering Japanese cars from the past

Rustoseums: Nissan Violet SSS

This (nowadays) very rare second generation Datsun Violet is not for the faint hearted as its original color has been replaced by bubbly brown patina:

The Datsun Violet 160J SSS A10 was sold in Europe with the twin carbed L16T and was top of the line Violet back then. Given the state of this Violet now I reckon it should be currently at the bottom of the line. ;)

Can it really be that bad? Yes it can! Just take a look on the other side of the car: Continue reading

Carina Sightings: Yellow Carina GT AA63 that is NOT for sale!

My heart skipped a beat when I saw this beautiful yellow Carina GT AA63 for sale on Auctions Yahoo:
Yellow Carina GT AA63 not for sale!
It looked so perfect, immaculate and I just wished I had the money to buy it and ship it to the other side of this planet. But this picture gets even better if you squint your eyes! :P

So when I translated the auction it stated this at the bottom:
Please stop the questions in English. We will not ship internationally, thank you.
Normally that is not a real problem if you use a man-in-the-middle like Hayatonka, so actually you can still consider it for sale!

Anyway, the strange thing about this car is that it is actually a late GT: Continue reading

Down on the Street: bumperless Civic EK

I spotted three different nicely tuned Civics on my way to work (and back) and every time I promised myself to take a picture of them. The first one is a four door Civic EF on kyusha mesh rims, the other a dark red/brown Civic Shuttle EE and the last one was this bumperless Civic EK:
Bumperless Honda Civic EK
Complete with bucketseats, rollcage and a big exhaust. As they are all parked every time on almost the same spot presumably they are owned by the same person. So reckon this as the first post out of three. ;)

Dunno if the owner follows the bumperless craze or it was actually a coincidence…

The Carina A6 in the Toyota Family Tree

A couple of days ago Japanese Nostalgic Car posted (yes I do read their blog occasionally) that because of their 75th anniversary Toyota created a big family tree of all models they created. Of course I immediately looked up the third generation Carina in it:
Carina A60 in the Toyota family tree
The nice thing is that they have a fairly good description on the timelines and model and it even includes what plat produced the car. The whole Carina lineup was produced in the Tsutsumi plant. They do mention the addition of the 1C diesel, 4T-GTE and 4A-GE engines but they forgot to add them to the specification sheet.

Another fun fact is that they set the release date to a specific date and in the case of the third generation Carina it was 7th of September 1981: coincidentally my dads birthday. ;)

Direct links to the model pages:

Carina A60 coupe (RA63/TA61/TA63/SA60/AA60)
Carina A60 Surf (SA60)
Carina A60 van (TA67)

You can also view the original/initial catalogs, but later ones are not included. Links to the catalogs:
Carina A60 sedan and coupe (September 1981)
Carina A60 Surf (February 1982)
Carina A67 van (September 1981)

If you really want to reverse engineer you can actually access the scanned pages of the catalogs directly. These are the first page and last page of the first catalog. ;)

BTW: I just realized the old site got broken after the server upgrade a few months ago and the old content has disappeared. I’ll see if I can fix that. :)
