Remembering Japanese cars from the past

Video: Second Japanese Grand Prix 1964 at Suzuka Circuit

One of the people I’m following on Youtube, uncrowdedmonarch, posted this video of a typically 60s race at Suzuka Circuit and I think it’s the 1964 Japanese Grand Prix:

The second race is Touring Class V where the Prince Skylines easily won from their competion (Hino Contessa 900, Nissan Bluebird 410) and took al first six places!

Japanese Grand Prix 1964 Prince Skyline 2000GT vs Porsche 904 GT-II
Looking at the results of the first race (skip to 6:42) this must have been the legendary second Japanese Grand Prix (held on 2nd and 3rd of May 1964) in which the new Prince Skyline S54 2000GTs lost to a single (privately entered) Porsche 904 in the GT-II class! Even though the Skylines took consecutively 2nd to 6th place blowing away the competition (MG-Bs and Isuzu Bellet) this loss was so humiliating that Dr. Sakuri of Prince Motors initiated a project to create the ultimate racecar to defeat the Porsche the next time. This grudge still lives on in the battle between Nissan and Porsche for the fastest lap times around the Nürburgring. This learned Nissan what the best place is to humiliate someone: its home turf! ;)

The project resulted in the amazing legendary Prince R380. The next time Prince and Porsche met (1966 Japanese Grand Prix) the R380 proved to be worthy to its maker: Prince defeated the Porsche 906 by taking first and second place!

DOTS: Honda Civic Mk4 with bullet holes

After last weeks rusty Civic it is time for another Civic:

I noticed something was odd about this fourth generation Civic. It was not the fact that it was powered by the 1.5 liter D15B, nor that it was another automatic… I noticed it had some weird unfamiliar damage on the windshield…

Looking up close:

WTF!? Bullet holes??
Note that guns are not for sale in the Netherlands. They are uncommon and can not be obtained unless you got a license and permit to carry one! Or have 500 bucks and the right connections of course! ;)

As you can see there are at least nine of them on the windshield! The driverseat was covered with a blanket and the car was parked on the outskirts of town, so I presume he/she got shot.

So, why was this car parked here? If the police was involved they probably towed the car away and put it in storage for investigation… Maybe that’s what they did: next time I passed that spot a couple of days later the car was gone…

My Carina: Toyota T series engine repair manual

Another thing received for the 2T-B upgrade:

Toyota T series repair manual

I was lucky enough the seller of this manual was not aware of how scarce the T series engine repair manual is! She was selling a lot of manuals for American cars, I placed a low bid and she probably thought she was doing a great deal! Lucky! ?(´?`)/

The manual describes how to rebuild the whole engine, including all types of T series carburettors!

It also describes how everything should be set up…

And the most important thing: how to synchronize and tune the double carburettors of the 2TB! (???)

Commerical time: Nissan Sunny uber alles?

When I saw this video on Youtube my first thought was ohmygodohmygodohmygodohmygodohmygodohmygod!

This Nissan Sunny B13 commercial of the early 90s is having a really badly sung German-like song (probably by a Japanese woman) and a Japanese man dressed up as a German hunter praising it. Lucky enough they did not go for the over the top Bavarian look!

And the things I could make of the German lyrics of the song was: “Ich bin zu frieden” (I’m content), “Und mochte nichts mehr haben” (And don’t need anything else) and “ist dies falsch über alles?” (is this wrong about everything?). I couldn’t make much more of it, but the “zu frieden”, “mehr haben” and “über alles” are the keywords of this advertisement. Nissan Sunny über alles?

How bad can it get?

Please don’t mind the misspellings in German or a bad translation from my side: German is not my mother tongue.

Hilarious: Smokey Nagata’s way of emission testing

Some months ago I posted Smokey Nagata’s Skyline V34 GT-R in the hilarious section, this time another hilarious video by Smokey Nagata:

As you can see: he is doing his emissions test of his catalytic converter by putting Eiji “Tarzan” Yamada inside the Top Secret Supra and comparing results of before and after.
