Flyrat: Tommy Kaira M30

Just browsing through the Flyrat blog and came across this rare Tommy Kaira M30:
Tommy Kaira M30
Tommy Kaira M30

I thought it would be nice to share this car: this is one of the very rare occasions you will see this car, apart from when you play games like Gran Turismo! :D

Tommy Kaira M30
Tommy Kaira M30

Tommy Kaira was already a renowned tuner in Japan since 1968, but in 1987 they made their first rebadged version of a tuned production car: the Tommy Kaira M19! (based upon a Mercedes 190) Starting from 1988 they changed focus and put themselves exclusively to modifying Japanese production cars, starting with the Tommy Kaira M30!

This car is often mistaken for the Infinity M30, which is actually a Nissan Leopard F31. The Tommy Kaira M30 was intially based upon the Skyline GTS-R R31 and later on based upon the Skyline GTS-t R32. This particular car is the R31 based M30. The car was tuned up to Tommy Kaira’s specifications by lowering and stiffening up the suspension and swap the engine for a custom built RB30DE!

The engine was a work of art: they took out the RB20DE engine, removed the head and put it on top of a RB30E engine, and thus creating a RB30DE engine. Then the workshop increased the compression ratio, cams, port polish and all this raised the M30’s power output from 159hp to 238hp! There were some limitations to this engine: the RB30E bottom is not as strong and refined as its lesser counterpars and created inbalance. This results in and engine that can’t be revved over 7200rpm. On the other side it has massive amounts of torque!

Nowadays this trick is happily done by the Australians as well to upgrade their Australian built Skyline R31s (RB30E engines only) to a more decent power ouput. The only difference is that the Aussies do a much bolder job than Tommy Kaira: they swap over the newer RB25DET head to make it a more powerful turbo version of the M30 engine!

All other parts of the car remained the same as the factory spec GTS-R. This can be seen in the austere (or yet better: spartan) interior of the car. On the other hand: who needs luxury if you got one of the coolest Skylines ever?

You can buy this beauty for the small sum of $16,495 at Flyrat!

Japanese rustoseums (part three)

As promised: this time a Japanese rustoseums without a Toyota. Well, actually it is a one car only episode! ;)

Rustoseum: Nissan Skyline C210 Wagon
Rustoseum: Nissan Skyline C210 Wagon

As you can see: a terribly rusted Nissan Skyline C210 wagon!

You can almost see through its door without using the window! ;)

Rustoseum: Nissan Skyline C210 Wagon
Rustoseum: Nissan Skyline C210 Wagon

And what would you see then? A bunch of crap piled up inside!

Imagine the potential of this car! Just like the infamous Carina firevan you can put a mighty engine in there, lower it to ground scraping heights! Or just put in the L20ET engine from the 2000GT-EX turbo and you would certainly have the coolest Skyline Japan sleeper of them all!

Too bad this example is too rusted for all that: even the hood has crumbled away enough to give us a glance of the engine in there. Most probably a L16T as fitted in the 1600TI together with a lot of foliage!

Scans of the Dutch Nissan 2400 GT catalogue

I’ve finally finished scanning the Nissan 2400 GT brochure I bought earlier! It took me a while because I also wanted to translate its contents first and then publish it here. ;)

The cover:
Dutch Nissan 2400 GT catalogue cover
Dutch Nissan 2400 GT catalogue cover

The first page:
Dutch Nissan 2400 GT catalogue page 1
Dutch Nissan 2400 GT catalogue page 1

The second page:
Dutch Nissan 2400 GT catalogue page 2
Dutch Nissan 2400 GT catalogue page 2

Basically the text says the interior is a very roomy interior (five persons) and a very good readable dash.
Full translation can be found here:
http://www.banpei.net/image/nissan-2400gt-catalogue-page-2

The third page:
Dutch Nissan 2400 GT catalogue page 3
Dutch Nissan 2400 GT catalogue page 3

This page gives an overview of all safety features (cage-constructed and two waist seat belts) and shows all important specs. I hope I translated all specs correctly, so don’t pin me down on that! If you have a correction for that: please let me know! ;)
Full translation can be found here:

The fourth page:
Dutch Nissan 2400 GT catalogue page 4
Dutch Nissan 2400 GT catalogue page 4

Text is not that important: it sums up all key characteristics a bit. What is a bit weird is that they call the car durable. Keep in mind that, as far as I know, there are no Nissan 2400 GT’s left in the Netherlands! There are some 2400 GTs left in Portugal, Finland and Switzerland though… Also durable means something else nowadays: would they have planted 1200 trees to compensate its CO2? Or did they construct it out of only re-usable materials?

And the last page:
Dutch Nissan 2400 GT catalogue rear
Dutch Nissan 2400 GT catalogue rear

Not very interesting. It says the catalogue is from 1970-1972, which are the years the Nissan 2400 GT was sold in the Netherlands.

Hope you appreciated me sharing this with the rest of the world! :P
I only placed smaller versions of the scans online with watermarking (to prevent hotlinking/stealing). If you need the originals for some reason or you want to buy that brochure for some rediculous price, don’t hesitate to contact me! ;)

Another genuine Dutch Datsun catalogue

Got another present from the postman earlier this week:
Dit is Datsun: Dutch catalogue (cover)
Dit is Datsun: Dutch catalogue (cover)

This is a 28 page catalogue to celebrate the 6th anniversary of Datsun in the Netherlands. It also featured a small part about their almost finished new HQ near Lisse.

Dit is Datsun: Dutch catalogue (fold out)
Dit is Datsun: Dutch catalogue (fold out)

The mid sections contains a few fold outs from which this one is the most interesting: the 1972 lineup:
– Datsun 100A (Cherry E10)
– Datsun 1200 (Sunny B110)
– Datsun 1600 (Bluebird 510)
– Datsun 1800 (Bluebird 610)
– Datsun 2400 (Cedric C230)
Nissan 2400GT (Skyline HGLC10)
– Datsun 240Z

Yes, that is not a mistake I made there: Nissan sold the Skyline on its export markets under the Nissan brand. There could have been various reasons to do so from which I personally think it had to do something with the Prince merger…

Dit is Datsun: Dutch catalogue (2000 Hardtop Coupe)
Dit is Datsun: Dutch catalogue (2000 Hardtop Coupe)

As you could see there was a gap in the lineup: the only car not featured in the lineup was the 2000. In the next fold out this car is highlighted as the new model of the 2000 range with a nice drawing of the 2000 Hardtop Coupe. The 2000 is also known as the Nissan Laurel C130 and is very very popular car as a zokusha. ( ? ??)

Of course this catalogue will be scanned and posted here, just like the Nissan 2400GT catalogue I’m currently scanning. (?-´)>

Genuine Dutch Nissan 2400GT catalogue

Look what fell on my doormat two days ago?

A Dutch Nissan 2400GT (aka Skyline) catalogue from 1972! (???)

I found this rarity through a Dutch seller of old Datsun press photos and she did have this catalogue in her possesion as well! Lucky! (???)

Japanese rustoseums (part one)

Japanese Nostalgic Car blog found another blog full of rotting J-tin. [???]

Most of these blogs have pictures of rusted cars in both wild and urban areas! It appears like it is a national hobby in Japan to keep your old car outside your house if you have the space for it and otherwise park it in a yard (aka rustoseum) with some other rusty friends.

Just have a look at some cars featured on the blog JNC-blog found:
1967 or 1968 Nissan Cedric C130
1967 or 1968 Nissan Cedric C130

A rare Nissan Cedric C130 Mark 2 from 1967 or 1968 without a windscreen. Windscreen missing == rotten interior! Not good! ?(?`???)?

Nissan Skyline GC10 2 door hardtop coupe
Nissan Skyline GC10 2 door hardtop coupe

A Nissan Skyline C10 2 door hardtop coupe, in other words a KGC10 (GT-X) or a KPGC10 (GT-R). But actually there is no hardtop anymore! Hopefully another GC10 hardtop coupe is happy with its new top…

Nissan Skyline C210 1600ti
Nissan Skyline C210 1600ti

Nissan Skyline C210 1600ti: the lowest spec of the C210 Skyline. A mere L16T inline 4 with double carb setup powered this Skyline. I would still love to own this car though: it would be a lot faster than my Carina! (???)

If you ever wondered what the Skyline C210 without round taillights looks like, have a look at this picture:
Nissan Skyline C210 1600ti rear
Nissan Skyline C210 1600ti rear

Not too bad, isn’t it?

On the same dump there was also this super clean car:
Very clean Toyota Carina GT-TR TA63
Very clean Toyota Carina GT-TR TA63

A Carina GT-TR TA63!! (???)
I have no idea what it was doing there: I could not find a rusty spot on it. Even better: not even a spec of dust! According to the blogger the car was for sale!

Stay tuned for more pictures from Japanese rustoseums!
