Remembering Japanese cars from the past

Drive on the Tokyo Expressway KK-line (1986 versus 2024) – Friday Video

My favourite Showa-nostalgic Youtube channel Kamepo posted another video: the two-kilometer-long Tokyo Expressway KK-line. The Tokyo Expressway has a rich history and already dates back to 1951 when the first plans were drawn up. In 1959 the first section opened up and it was fully opened up in 1966.

Kamepo describes in the video that most of the expressway is built on top of commercial buildings or that the commercial buildings have been built underneath it. The 1960s were definitely strange times!

Highlights

As this section of road is only 2 kilometres in length, there aren’t that many cars to spot. Unlike my usual spotting, I have also included some cars from the opposite lane. I normally omit to spot these because they are very difficult and hard to distinguish as the frames get very blurry.

Yet still I managed to find a couple of highlights: a diesel powered Nissan Cedric or Gloria 430 wagon, a Nissan Cedric Y30 taxi, a duo of Toyota Carina A60s, a Honda N-WGN and a Nissan Skyline Ti C210/C211.

JDM Trivia #3: Nissan Gloria Jack Nicklaus edition

JDM Trivia #3: Nissan Gloria Jack Nicklaus edition

This is JDM Trivia number three!
JDM Trivia #3: Nissan Gloria Jack Nicklaus edition
Daniel O’Grady from Wasabi Cars guessed last weeks teaser: the man is indeed Jack Nicklaus and his connection with Nissan is the Nissan Gloria.

The Golden Bear

Jack Nicklaus, also nicknamed The Golden Bear, is regarded as the greatest professional golfer ever. Within the 25 years when he was actively competing he won 18 major championships. Most car manufacturers like to get a bit of that fame and glory with their classy cars and Nissan wasn’t the only one to line up for Jack Nicklaus. Continue reading

JCS 2010 highlights (part two)

Let’s continue (and finish) the highlights of Japan Classic Sunday 2010!

First of all these two blue Corolla KE30s drew my attention:
Two Corolla KE30s

I briefly spoke to the owner and his buddy. They surely love to keep these old Rollas alive! :)

Another Corolla, but this time PetzK’s AE86:

It finally returned to its home soil (it used to be a Dutch 3 door!) and the car looks even better than on the pictures I saw before. Too bad I didn’t have the opportunity to chat! :(

Talking about 3 door AE86s:

He won second place in the youngtimer class (two years ago he became first). Winning a price on the JCS is not a bad thing, but winning twice is a very good thing! Congrats again Ibrahim! :)

Iwan brought both his Datsun Super Six and this Datsun 280C wagon:

Datsun 280C (Nissan Gloria/Cedric 430) wagon
Datsun 280C (Nissan Gloria/Cedric 430) wagon

Not only can this 280C bring along 8 passengers (!) but it also has a small side window that can be operated through the keyhole in the back (seen in the last picture!). It was meant as a feature for Japanese people who returned shopping and wanted to load their groceries into the car without stepping off the pavement! Talk about (useless) innovation! :D

And last but not least, this Corolla Levin BG-Z AE111:
Toyota Corolla Levin BZ-G AE111
Toyota Corolla Levin BZ-G AE111

Toyota Corolla Levin BZ-G AE111

Believe it or not: this car is an original Luxembourg car! A collector from Luxembourg ordered this RHD car through a Toyota dealer directly from Japan, so this is one of the few original AE111 delivered outside Japan! Amazing!

That’s it for JCS 2010! Can’t wait for JCS 2011! (if that is ever going to happen!)

Hilarious: Deka renzoku cosplay

I’ve posted something about hilarious Cosplay (????) in the past and this one is just as funny as that posting: Deka renzoku cosplay! In other words: police series cosplay!
Deka renzoku cosplay: Seibu Keisatsu

Yes, that’s the old Chief Daimon next to the Nissan 280ZX alright!

And what about his double next to the Gloria 430 then?

And people not only took characters from Seibu Keisatsu, but also from Abunai Deka:

Wait, is that detective Takayama next to the Nissan Leopard??

Yes it is!!

Dunno if this form of cosplay actually is called Deka Renzoku Cosplay, but I kind of found the words Deka (police) and renzoku (recurring series) together on another site and liked a combination of that! ;)

Japanese rustoseums (part 10)

I haven’t got the guts to post up more of those rotten away sportscars like last week, so this time I have a Nissan Gloria 430 wagon for you:
Nissan Gloria 430 wagon 280d
Nissan Gloria 430 wagon 280d

Someone bought this Gloria 430 as his family wagon second hand in 1990 and parked out in the back of his premisses three years later and left it there for 16 years! In these 16 years of time bamboo and other plants surrounded the car completely and the car sunk slowly into the ground.

Someone actually was crazy enough to save it and bought this Gloria simply because of its rarity!

The new owner bought the car as being a Cedric, but when he picked it up it turned out to be a Gloria instead. So even the Japanese can’t tell the Cedric and Gloria apart either! (even when a big sign on the trunk says GLORIA)

The Gloria itself is a 280D, which means it is powered by a LD28 2.8 litre diesel. The engine itself is not the most powerful engine, but it surely has a lot of torque! Too bad this car can’t really use that well with its automatic gearbox…

The car came with a set of genuine vintage rims, a lot of mud, rust and lucky enough the handbrake wasn’t stuck either. The owner towed the car home and already began cleaning it and fixing it up.

This man is a real hero: I would certainly have walked away from such a dump! I’ll keep an eye upon this project and post the outcome when it has been finished! :)
