Carina Sightings: Digital Cluster at Ebay

Rovin sent me a message that he is selling a JDM digital cluster for the Carina A60 on Ebay:

Just like the other top of the line early 80s cars by Toyota, the Carina got a digital cluster as well. It all started with the 1981 Toyota Soarer, then it passed on to the 1982 Toyota Celica XX, the 1982 Toyota Carina, 1982 Toyota Crown S110 and later on in the 1983 Toyota Corolla Levin and Toyota Sprinter Trueno AE86. Note that all cars (except the AE86) were released with a digital dash before the worlld was introduced with the digital dashboard from Knight Rider! ;)

Anyway, Rovin is selling this rare (optional) digital dashboard for the Carina A60, and it even includes the necessary connectors:

From experience with the AE86 digital cluster I can say that you also would need a digital fuel sender and a digital oil pressure sensor to make it work. Nevertheless I’d say it is a very fine upgrade for your Carina! If only I had the money for it…

Carina Sightings: Kyusha Kai Carina GT-TR

I found this kyusha kai styled Carina GT-TR on a spring meeting of a few other Carinas on Carview. I think this is definitely the coolest Carina I saw so far:

Lowered, black fender extenders, gunmetal grey RS Watanabe rims, rollcage, bride seat, etc. etc…

Now that Carina alone would have been a great post by itself, but then I spotted this picture of a Carina A60 sticker:

The coolest thing ever!! Now let’s see if I can lay my hands upon one! :)

Carina Sightings: what the 3T-GTE sounds like!

The sound of this 3T-GTE is one of the most amazing sounds I’ve heard so far!

If you wonder what the engine is: it is the Toyota 1.8 litre 3T engine with a Yamaha DOHC head slapped upon it. It was a quite normal practice for Toyota to do such a thing to beef up their normal engines. However if that wasn’t enough the Yamaha head featured dual spark and Toyota added a big Toyota CT-20 turbo charger on top of it. The 3T engine normally produced somewhere between the 70 and 105 hp (depending on the market and amount of carbs), but this turbo charged dual spark dual overhead cam beauty managed to squeeze out 160hp! Since Toyota kept the six cylinders to the Celica XX alone this 160hp engine was featured in the normal Celica and (lucky enough) its sister models Carina and Corona. Now if only I could lay my hands upon one! ;)

Carina sightings: Russian Carina TA63 sedan

While browsing some pictures of old JDM tin I found a topic on a Russian forum about old Japanese cars in Russia. One of its members owns this great white Carina GT-TR TA63 sedan:

Somehow the wide Russian plate really makes it look more bad than the tinted windows! (???)

The Carina only travelled 162002 kilometers so far:
162002 km on the odometer
162002 km on the odometer

And according the owner the 3T-GTE engine is quite powerful. Of course, anything in such lightweight car feels powerful. ;)

Cruise computer, Aircon, autoreverse tapedeck, sunroof!

And the options just keep on going:
electric windows, electric mirrors, cruise computer, air conditioner, gidrach (?) power steering, electricity boards, sunroof, LSD, all disc brakes, the music on 5 speakers (4 + subwoofer), illumination of the driver’s seat and the ignition lock at night

Carina Sightings: Davy’s Carina TA63 at Hampton Down

I spotted the pictures of Davy’s Carina at first at Phils car blog, then headed over to Garage Slipway to read the whole story behind its run on Hampton Down.

Here the Carina is still running fast, but after only a couple of laps he heard a loud thudding noise and pulled up in the pits. Apparently nothing looked weird and he headed back on the track.

Had a look and couldn’t determine what it was. So what the heck I went out again. Then halfway around the track BANG, then no power. To be specific, no fuel as the line snapped and wrapped around the driveshaft which bought my car to a halt at the first hairpin.

The fuel line was probably grabbed by the driveshaft after it had some sort of in imbalance. Seen such a thing happen with Mux’s Levin AE86 and it turned out that one of the bolts on the rubber pivot was broken off. You can imagine what happens next when you are driving hard on a circuit. :o

I must say the JDM zenki Trueno AE92 bumper suits Davy’s Carina very well!

And this is how the Carina remained the rest of the session:

Parked up in the pits. A sad sight. :(

Carina sightings: Carina GT-TR JZA63 monster

My mouth started watering when I spotted this amazing JZA63 Carina GTTR buildup:

The Carina was originally a TA63 GTTR model, so attaching the 2JZ engine to the W55 instead of the 3T was easy.

The car is AE86 front struts converted to fit the 8 way adjustable AE92 HTS shocks and a R33 4 pot brake conversion has been done as well. Only a few bushings have been replaced by its polyurethane counterparts, but at the front it features 12k Swift springs and 8k TBS springs at the rear. So it should be stiff as a board.

All around the car is featuring Work Meisters in 17 inch diameter and 9J wide! To fit those rims the fenders had to be extended at the rear. 205/40 tires are lightly stretched over these Meisters.

The interior of the Carina is stripped and replaced with a set of Recaro seats and a roll cage has been fitted.

Of course the engine has been modified as well: NA 2JZ was taken from a JZS140 Crown with TRD cams, ITBs, a custom built oilpan and a special purpose muffler. In other words: very powerful! The owner even switched the W55 to a W58 gearbox to handle all that power!

In other words: this JZA63 Carina is a beast which I’d certainly would love to tame! ;)
