Remembering Japanese cars from the past

Hilarious: how to make a 25 year old car win an eco race!

Hot Version proves yet again that the AE86 can still keep up with the latest and greatest cars! While they proved the AE86 could still easily win from several great cars (like the Skyline R34, Honda S2000, etc) and tuners (re-amemiya, etc) they now proved it can even keep up with the latest Eco trends: the Tec-Arts Eco AE86 beats a field of Honda CR-Zs (and a Mini)!

Wait a minute… An eco AE86?? Yes, of course it all depends how you define Eco! Tec-Arts changed a lot of things on the AE86:
– Make the engine to run much smoother instead of letting it scream till the 8200rpm
Smooth running 4AGE
Smooth running 4AGE

– installed an eco button to close of the TVIS
AE86 with Eco button
AE86 with Eco button

– changed the alternator and starter to a more modern version to lower its drag
– changed power steering to an electric unit instead of an engine powered!
– and last but not least: they put foil on the windows to keep you from using the aircon too much.

Now if that is seriously considered as eco my Carina is twice as much eco as that!! It doesn’t have power steering, aircon nor a TVIS! 😉

Carina Sightings: Digital Cluster at Ebay

Rovin sent me a message that he is selling a JDM digital cluster for the Carina A60 on Ebay:
Digital Cluster for the Carina
Digital Cluster for the Carina

Just like the other top of the line early 80s cars by Toyota, the Carina got a digital cluster as well. It all started with the 1981 Toyota Soarer, then it passed on to the 1982 Toyota Celica XX, the 1982 Toyota Carina, 1982 Toyota Crown S110 and later on in the 1983 Toyota Corolla Levin and Toyota Sprinter Trueno AE86. Note that all cars (except the AE86) were released with a digital dash before the worlld was introduced with the digital dashboard from Knight Rider! 😉

Anyway, Rovin is selling this rare (optional) digital dashboard for the Carina A60, and it even includes the necessary connectors:

From experience with the AE86 digital cluster I can say that you also would need a digital fuel sender and a digital oil pressure sensor to make it work. Nevertheless I’d say it is a very fine upgrade for your Carina! If only I had the money for it…

DOTS: 1992 Subaru Leone DL

After shopping at the local DIY shop I spotted this Leone parked right next to the parking lot:

The car is a 1.6 DL. DL should stand for DeLuxe, but in Dutch terminology it means bottom of the lineup. 😛

Perhaps the owner is following the latest automotive trends, but I rather suspect the roofrack was intentional to haul some stuff back home:

BTW: the people from the Netherlands probably already noticed it by the sign, but I shot this picture already a few months ago… 😉
