My Carina: the Toyota Carina GT-R AA63 cluster

I just realized I did not post any pictures of the cluster I bought from Revolver Drift!

After his Carina coupe got stolen he did not have any use for the cluster anymore. Of course I was interested in the cluster since the European TA60 does not have a tachometer nor an oil pressure meter! We agreed upon the price and he sent the cluster to me.

Even though he packaged the cluster with the most wrapping materials I ever saw on a parcel it arrived with a broken trip-odometer-reset button. I have no idea how this could have happened while it was packaged that carefully… Maybe the parcel service played some hoops with it??

Different than the LHD cluster the temperature-, speedo- and odometer are on the left side of the cluster. I probably need to convert the input speedocable to fit on the left side instead of the right side to make it work. Also the odometer has a double trip meter. At first I was only been able to reset one, but later on found out you can pull the reset switch and select left or right. Then push the switch and it resets either the left or the right trip meter! Cleaver!

You can also see it has a digital clock instead of the analogue clock on the European models. Great 80s nostalgia!

Fuel meter is on the spot of the temperature meter (swapped over).

Oil pressure meter is on the spot where I normally find my econometer. Normally I can play a game of pong with the econometer by tapping the gas. Hopefully I won’t be able to do that with the oil pressure meter. ;)

Tachometer goes a bit further than my 2T is capable of. Honestly I have no idea what the maximum amount of revs are of my 2T, but judging from the sound it must be somewhere near the 5k when the auto gearbox shifts into second.

On the right all important warning lights and on the bottom there is the high beam warning light.

Redline of 7800 rpm! Just like the kouki AE86! (???)

On the European cluster I have three warning lights: door, handbrake and highbeam. I think the Japanese characters say “catalytic converter” and I presume the CHG light with a battery next to it means the charging of the battery fails… ?(‘?`?)?

The back wiring of the cluster. From what I read in the 1982 European Carina/Celica A6 body repair manual I own the connections on the back side are very different than the AA63 wiring. So this is a bit of a puzzle since the European repair manual does not have anything about the Celica AA63: it did not exist yet when that book was written! ?(???;)

Thanks again to Revolver Drift for the cluster!

2T-B upgrade: airfilter #1 arrived!

Got a phonecall during my vacation that this had arrived:
K&N open airfilter 2TB
K&N open airfilter 2TB

It is the open airfilter I ordered before going on holiday. At first I thought I’d go for the standard OEM Toyota 2T-B air filter housing, but The Doctor convinced me that I really should go for the open airfilter.

K&N open airfilter 2TB
K&N open airfilter 2TB

Especially since he offered me one of the two needed: his 3K engine died and after that he did not have any use for it anymore.

I’m glad I did make that decision: I test fitted the air filter on the 2T-B double carburetor setup:

Testfitting the K&N open airfilter on the 2T-B carburetor
Testfitting the K&N open airfilter on the 2T-B carburetor

The filter really looks bling and I can’t wait till I receive the second one! :)

2T-B upgrade: cleanup stage 1

The 2T-B upgrade is progressing slowly. After failing to find an original Celica TA60 2T-B airfilter house I ordered an open airfilter from K&H (part number 56-9138) and will get my second one once The Doctor will find his spare one. :P

Today I tried to clean the double carburetor setup from all its dirt and oil with a brush, a lot of paper kitchen towels and some petrol. After an hour I got exhausted (probably from inhaling too much petrol) and had to stop. The result is already a big difference:
2T-B upgrade: cleanup stage 1 - before
2T-B upgrade: cleanup stage 1 – before

2T-B upgrade: cleanup stage 1 - after
2T-B upgrade: cleanup stage 1 – after

I’ll give it a second try doing it this way and see if I can have it look clean enough. But as you can see: a lot of dirt and oil is unreachable for me, so I’m afraid I really have to take it apart to get it fully cleaned after all.

Carina Sightings: my Carina within 5 years?

I was wondering if this white Toyota Carina TA60 I found on autoscout24 is actually my very own Carina within 5 years…

On this picture the car looks quite okay:
This Carina TA60 could be the brother of mine
This Carina TA60 could be the brother of mine

But when looking more into the details it gets less beautiful:
Rust on the right front fender
Rust on the right front fender

And even worse:
Trunk decal is almost rusting off!
Trunk decal is almost rusting off!

And this view looks very very familiar:
Nice clean dashboard and a 5 speed gearbox
Nice clean dashboard and the car has a 5 speed gearbox

And even the interior is exactly the same as mine (but then a bit more worn):
Stained seats and dirty carpets
Stained seats and dirty carpets

So it is a white Carina TA60 with white/black interior and the only difference between this one and my own are the 5 speed gearbox and the rusty spots… So the big question is: am I seeing the future here? ;)

TA40 pedalbox arrived!

The TA40 pedalbox has arrived yesterday!

TA40 pedals

Unfortunately Mark totalled his Celica TA40 and a lot of parts were salvagable. Lucky for me the TA40 pedalbox, master break and clutch cylinders were in perfect condition!

I bought the set because when converting from auto I’m in need of a clutch pedal. Since the TA40 and TA60 have the same bottom the pedalbox should be a perfect fit!

Thanks again for going through all trouble Mark!

Carina hits 75k mark

Carina done 75000km

Carina done 75000km

As you can see: my Carina drove 75000km so far!

Actually I didn’t really keep an eye upon the speedo, but while parking the car last sunday I noticed this odd (actually even!) phenomenon. ;)
