Remembering Japanese cars from the past

Commercial time: 80s greatest hits with Cultus GTi

The decade of the Ohs (or The Noughties as the British call them) has almost ended now, so how about some greatest hits from the 80s?

The Final Countdown by Europe
Which 80s song is more 80s than this song? I can’t think of any other song…
The heel-to-toe is a nice touch! ;)

West End Girls by the Pet Shop Boys
It is nice to see how the Cultus GTi rev meter mimics those amp meters you could find on every early 80s stereo!

Love Changes Everything by Climie Fisher
Back in the 80s I really hated those cheap songs by Climie Fisher, but in combination with the engine revs and tire squeal it gives a whole new dimension to this song. ;)

Died In Your Arms Tonight by Cutting Crew
Another one of those typically 80s songs. Now I hope the dying part of the song is supposed to be in a positive way or was it supposed to mean the car didn’t have any safety precautions like airbags? :D

The Suzuki Cultus SA310, could there be anything more 80s than this?

80s feeling: Gloria

This picture gave me a real 80s feeling:
A whole bunch of Nissan Gloria 430s!
A whole bunch of Nissan Gloria 430s!

First thing that got into my head was Gloria by Laura Branigan:

Gloria, you’re always on the run now
Running after somebody, you gotta get him somehow
I think you’ve got to slow down before you start to blow it
I think you’re headed for a breakdown, so be careful not to show it

Those lyrics suit the picture really well!

Hilarious: The Checkers (???????) namidano rekuesuto

Not that I’m a big fan of The Checkers (???????), but I came ac across them on with the song Electronic Dreams which is absolutely horrible. So actually I was looking for that video instead.

However I did come across their music video of Namidano Rekuesuto (also known as Namida no Request):

If you can’t watch the video, here is it located on youtube:

As you can see this is definitely a more horrible 80s video then

Hilarious: Fancy – China Blue

Since last week I am using Normally people would use it to listen to their favorite music and such. I found that it is actually a very good tool to find the lost treasures of music. :)

How to use it? Simple: think of a really bad band like for instance Modern Talking and use that band on to play similar music. Be patient and wait for to find those little gems for you. ;)

This week I found the singer Fancy with the hit China Blue:

Not only their music is horrible and stolen from Modern Talking, but they even copied their looks from other horrible bands/artists: the singer looks like how Michael Jackson wanted to look eventually, the keyboard player and drummer look like they were borrowed from Europe and the Chinese girl, who looks Thai to me, looks like she is played by Boy George. And those bright white smile of the keyboard player!! Directly stolen from Dieter Bohlen!

If you want to know more about Fancy, try here:

I’ll add another hilarious posting next week. :)

Hilarious: Automan

Last week my colleague told me about this hilarious TV series from the 80s:
Automan tv series

Automan is about a computer wizzard working for the police creating an program which makes him an Artificial Intelligence hologram which fights crime, with a sidekick called Cursor which is a thing that can draw polygons into holographic images as if they were real! Take Superman, Knight Rider, Airwolf, Battlestar Galactica and Tron, mash it together and you have Automan!!

Hilarious enough Cursor becomes a Lamborgini Countach quite often in the series and he drives Automan around town and takes cornes square with any speed!
Cursor brakes, you hear the tires squeal, but he brakes instantly. Amazing!!

Of course you can’t hurt a hologram, so bullets have no use:

Amazing! I wonder why the Dutch television never picked up this high grade tv series while we were stuck with The A-Team, Knight Rider and Airwolf!

Ofcourse this is hilarious now, but back then my colleague really loved this series, just like I loved Knight Rider or The Dukes of Hazzard. Nowadays you really see poor quality on those series as well. Even the first movies of Shuto Trials look rediculous nowadays: what use is doing 180s forward and reverse on driving on the Shuto Expressway? And those action shots are all shot doing 100km/h and then doubled in speed.

What would people think of Initial D in 10 or 15 years time? Would they think it was rediculous as well? In some ways I already find it rediculous and the CGI of the first stage is really outdated nowadays and that will only get worse in 10 or 15 years of time…

AE86 nominated as Japanese musclecar of the 80s

Jalopnik nominated the AE86 as Project Car Hell musclecar of the 80s and it is nominated against the Mitsubishi Starion.

The AE86 is a pretty cool car, of course, but these days it’s akin to what the ’69 Camaro was to my generation: just about the only old car that every high-school kid can identify.

You can find (and vote) here:
PCH, 80s Japanese Muscle Edition: AE86 or Starion?

I wished they would have taken my old AE86 as example of how the AE86 looks:
