Remembering Japanese cars from the past

Carina Sightings: pink shakotan Carina AA63

For my other blog Bosozoku Style I regularly visit various bosozoku style related sites. On AllJapanExpress I came across this pink shakotan Carina AA63:

Nicely lowered, overfenders and SSR Mk I rims at the rear. Just a few mods away from becoming a kaido racer! :)

I’m not sure what is worse on this Carina, the color or the bodywork:

Somehow I’m relieved this car did not have huge spoilers, oil coolers and a bamboo spears exhaust, but on the other hand it would have been fun to see such a thing. ;)

Reverse fetish: JDM Opel Calibra

Never ever thought I would be posting about an Opel Calibra, but these two are actually very nice ones! They are JDM Opel Calibras and styled after the DTM example:

Both have big overfenders, GT wings, Skyline GT-R special or BBS Competition wheels and such. Of course it looks nowhere near the DTM versions, but nevertheless very nice to see what Japanese can do with Euro spec cars.

Perhaps it is the same thing as we are trying to do when we mimic our own JDM styles. (´?`* ))?

DOTS: patient Mitsubishi 3000GT

I was cleaning up some old previous phonecam pictures and came across this Mitsubishi 3000GT I shot somewhere in September last year. It was patiently waiting at one of the railway crossings near my work:
Down on the street: Mitsubishi 3000GT
Down on the street: Mitsubishi 3000GT

I could only shoot the picture from behind this van since it was blocking my way (I was biking)

When the railway crossing opened up I was able to follow it and was able to make this action shot:
Down on the street: Mitsubishi 3000GT
Down on the street: Mitsubishi 3000GT

Even for a crappy (Nokia) phonecam I was amazed by the outcome of this picture! ?(´???)

The Mitsubishi 3000GT only sold in very low numbers in the Netherlands and this must have been the second time I saw one ever. Oh those fond memories of running this car in the first Sega GT against its Skyline GT-R rivals! (?????)

Mazda RX-500 concept car in the woods

In 1970 Mazda showed on the 17th Tokyo Motor Show one of the most extraordinary concept cars for its time: the RX-500. After 40 years this car is still as amazing as it was in 1970,

The only thing that bugs me is: what is it doing in the middle of a forest and why do the boy and girl in the background embrace each other? Are they afraid of the whole car? Is ti threatening them? What mastermind thought of such a bad publicity photo? ??(?????)??

Commerical time: Mazda Luce Lotatly Turbo

Even though every second of this commercial screams early 80s forward thinking it still didn’t convince enough people that the rotary engine would be the solution to every problem. The new Luce was a big luxurious Japanese battleship and weighted 1450 kilograms. Not exactly movable by its 1.3 liter 13B rotary engine.

On the other hand it hits the bullseye: luxurious sedans need a silent less vibrating engine like the 13B. Unfortunately the rotary engine lacks the torque. Nevertheless I would still like to own such a thing any day!

I love the lotaly turbo chime at the end.
