Friday Video: two hours non-stop 90s drifting

Mr Yumio at Youtube just uploaded his private drift videos from 1990 till 1993. Half of the content takes place at local drift events but the other half is shot on various touges. You really can see how things evolved since this early 90s drifting!
Friday Video: non-stop 90s drifting
It is interesting to observe in this video that most cars at the touge are old “disposable” cars. For instance the Nissan Skyline R30 and Toyota Corolla Levin/Sprinter Trueno AE86 are popular cars. At the circuit a lot of new cars can be seen: Mazda RX7 FC, Nissan Silvia S13, Nissan 180SX, Eunos Roadster and a Toyota Soarer Z30. Still the AE86 is ubiquitous at the circuit as well.

Other extraordinary cars seen at the touge are: Nissan Skyline GT-R PGC10, Isuzu Piazza, Isuzu Gemini PF60 and a hot Nissan Sunny B310. At the circuit the most odd thing is a second generation Honda CRX SiR drifting in reverse!

I bet you can’t wait to spend the remainder of your Friday afternoon watching this video: Continue reading

Video Option: Motoharu Kurosawa tests the Leopard F31

Long before Keiichi Tsuchiya earned his stripes in racing Motoharu Kurosawa dominated the Japanese GP in his hakosuka Skyline GT-R. The same happened with reviewing cars for Video Option magazine: long before we became familiar with Keiichi pushing any Japanese sports/racing/tuned car to the limit on a touge run Motoharu Kurosawa was doing the same:

Looking at this September 1988 review of the Nissan Leopard F31 it becomes clear a lot has changed in the past 24 years, for instance the tests that mattered: Continue reading

Family Album Treasures: Turbo Skylining

This guy must have been passing by this beautiful skyline of a lake next to the touge and thought it would be nice to stand between the two skylines! ;)
Skyline RS Turbo R30
This scene also reminds me a bit of the end scene of the first Shuto Kousoku Trial, but I guess that must be the Skyline plus the typical 80s fashion.

Video: Chichibu touge videos from 1990

I found ae86lan adding these videos to his favorites on Youtube. The three videos are footage of touge runs in May 1990 with mainly AE86s, AE82s and Starlets. I must warn that there is hardly any drifting involved in these videos: most cars car grip driving up and down the touges around Chichibu.

The Skyline lookalike tail lights in the beginning of the clip are from a Nissan Langley. You can also spot around 4:00 a Celica AA63 and around 5:00 a Carina AA63.

Here is another video from that very same night:

And last but not least, another one from a different night going up and downhill:

Video: Heartbreaking Nissan Skyline C110 crash tests

I found an early 70s short documentary about the development of the Nissan Skyline C110! It starts with the the C110 development, then moves to manufacturing of a C110 and then comparing a C110 to previous generations around 2:00 with a four-split screen.

Skyline C110 development and manufacturing

The only touges we saw in the past were nicely paved mountain passes with screaming twin cams drifting in a downhill battle. Nice to see there were actually rough touges in the 70s!

Skyline crash test

The end of the first and second video continue on the design and crash testing of the Skyline C110:

The test track is, of course, the Oppama Grandrive. Funny to see they already covered the looks of the testcars/prototypes with black cloth as well back then! And just when you think everything is going well they show the C110 Skyline crash test! What’s even more heartbreaking are all those crashed C110s piled up with foliage growing through them.

I must say this is one of the nicest vintage videos I’ve seen in ages!
