Yes, you are reading that right: I bought an AE86 from Japan! Well, actually it will be AEU86 (the company, not the forums) that will get the car from Japan. The plan, so far, is to get the car from Japan, fix it up and resell it after a few months. I know for sure I will regret selling it…
The whole idea of importing an AE86 has been going on for a few months already. I don’t have a bucket-list, but if I had one this is one of those things you want to get off it. In timelines I reckon the whole process from start till end takes about four months, but that’s something we’ll have to see and experience. It took me quite a lot of work to figure most of it out upfront, as not many people have documented this process from start till end. So I’m also planning to share this experience back to you in a couple of vlogs.
I expected people to jump on the Fujiwara Tofu livery of the Corolla E80 sedan and I was right about that. Actually I wasn’t aiming for the Initial D inspired sticker but rather for the panda AE86 paint scheme applied to it. Why? Well because the two tone panda paint scheme of the AE86 is actually quite subtle and it is easy to make mistakes in it.

To get started, and sorry if you already know this, but there are two types of the hachi roku: the Toyota Corolla Levin and the Toyota Sprinter Trueno. The former has fixed square head lights while the latter has 70s and 80s style popup head lights. Both of them featured in two body styles: 3 door hatch back and 2 door sedan. People also refer both as a coupe as they have been marketed as a coupe in various regions. However according to the Toyota firewall ID plates the real coupe is the 3 door hatchback and the 2 door sedan is called a hardtop. For some time now I have been pondering about the ridiculously long car names for the 80s and 90s JDM cars. I gathered data from various Japanese car manufacturers, made a potential selection of models, looked up their brochures and wrote down the name as advertised.
What I did was probably not a very good scientific approach but for a long shot this probably will do and I may have left out two or three ridiculously long car names this way. As I’m a database guru I put everything in a database and made my calculations based on that.

Yesterday I received an email (sent to AEU86) from Denil Oh if we could run his Initial D legos box proposal on our forums. Of course we could, and even better: we’ll promote the heck out of it as it needs 10000 supporters to get it to reality and that sounds like it would be doable!
The Toyota Sprinter Trueno AE86 complete with Takumi Fujiwara and the Fujiwara Tofu Shop the box would be an excellent starter for both kids and adults: adults (like me) remembering the series and buying the box for their kids to enjoy! 😉
The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence, so naturally in the US and Europe we love the JDM cars and RHD is actually a novelty. It is no different in Japan: they love USDM and EUDM car: in the past I’ve posted a few other reverse-fetishes. In this case it is all about a left hand drive (LHD) Toyota Sprinter Trueno AE86 at the HaCHiRoCK Festa 2008:
Seen from the dash it is an USDM model (tachometer on the left, speedo in miles), the seat has the inflatable lumbar pump (as seen on the Celica XX) on the driver seat and the body style is a JDM Trueno or USDM GT-S. The source only has this particular photo so it is unclear whether an existing RHD has been converted to LHD or this car is actually a genuine USDM Toyota Corolla GT-S imported into Japan (most probably), so we’ll probably never know for sure…
