JDM Trivia #6: 1981 Nissan Drive Guide System

JDM Trivia #6: 1981 Nissan Drive Guide System

This weeks trivia is all about the 1981 Nissan Drive Guide system which was basically a crude navigation system for the Nissan Skyline DR30 and the Nissan Gazelle and Silvia S12. Nobody took a wild guess at the teaser from last week, but I’ll get to the purpose of the antenna in this episode!
JDM Trivia #6: Nissan Drive Guide System
In the 1970s the most advanced navigational system in your car was…a road atlas and a compass! Of course the US military was solving that problem by shooting up GPS satellites from 1973 onwards but the automotive industry also made attempts. In the 1980s in Germany and the US companies used antennas to send signals via various radio frequencies but this was very costly. Meanwhile in Japan Toyota, Honda and Nissan made their own attempts to solve the car navigation question.

1980s Japanese Navigational systems

In 1981 Honda implemented a system called Electro Gyrocator and this system breathed tech savvy Hondaness as the system used an Helium gas gyroscope to detect both rotation and movement. The complex system required printed plastic maps and if you are interested in more photos and background information, Japanese Nostalgic Car blog wrote an article about it. In the same year Toyota implemented a system on their Celica XX but I was not able to find any information about how that system worked. Read the rest of this entry →

What if: the Saint would drive a Nissan Silvia CSP311?

March 4, 2015 in What if

I had an interesting thought when I watched BANKAKUEMIKO’s video on a white Nissan Silvia CSP311: what if Roger Moore would have driven a Nissan Silvia CSP311 in the original Saint TV series? The white Silvia looked so classy, elegant and exciting that the Saint certainly would have bought one if he could have.
Nissan Silvia CSP311
A little bit of background: The Saint (played by Roger Moore) drove a white Volvo P1800 coupe in the TV series where both the director and Roger Moore both owned one and used it for the TV series. They had to choose between the Jaguar E-type and the Volvo P1800 as they were brand new cars that got revealed at the Geneva Motor Show and chose for the latter. The Volvo P1800 initially was a hand built car by Jensen using a Volvo engine and suspension. Enter the Nissan Silvia CSP311: it was a hand built car using the Nissan Fairlady engine and suspension.

Now I know it could not have been the Nissan Silvia CSP311 as the original Saint TV series was aired from 1962 onwards (so filming started early 1962) and the Nissan Silvia CSP311 was revealed in September 1964 at the Tokyo Motor Show. So there was a gap of two and a half years. Also the main reason for featuring a foreign car on an English TV show was that it actually was built in the UK by Jensen so featuring an exotic car like the Silvia would have been out of the question. Still I would have loved the idea and therefore I made a terrible Photoshop of Roger Moore and the Silvia: Read the rest of this entry →

June 27, 2014 in ebay treasures

It is always sad to see an abandoned project for sale, especially if it may be a well known Nissan Silvia S12 Grand prix widebody:

The other Nissan Silvia Super Silhouette racer

May 4, 2014 in webmining

There is so much footage of the Hoshino Impul Nissan Silvia KS110 Super Silhouette race car that we tend to forget there was actually another car on the gird that resembled it: the Nissan Gazelle KS110 driven by Haruhito Yanagida!

In the season 1981 Yanagida’s car resembled Hoshino’s car with its bodyshape, but Yanagida’s car wasn’t a Silvia: it was a Gazelle. So you see the difference? 😉
I guess most of the audience also had difficulties and therefore Yanagida changed the bodyshape to the Nissan Bluebird 910 from the 1982 season onwards.

Video: 1988 Mitsubishi Mirage cup race

February 13, 2014 in video

Regular readers know I have a weakness for the third generation Mitsubishi Mirage (which is also known as the Mitsubishi Colt outside Japan) because it was my first car. I guess everybody has the same thing with his/her first car… So of course I was very excited to watch this ’87 Mitsubishi Mirage cup race taken from an 1988 Best Motoring video (posted on Youtube by Rocketpencil):

Of course my Colt wasn’t as quick as this the ones zooming over the circuit (mine actually featured the slowest 1.3 SOHC carb-ed engine) so I can only dream of what performance must have come out of the 4G61T powered Mirages. The specs on Wikipedia speak about the range of 200hp, so not bad for a 1.6 litre Twin Cam Turbo engine. 😉

Anyway, here is the video: Read the rest of this entry →
